On the Edge

When I hear the phrase “on the edge” I usually picture someone on a cliff or the top of a mountain balancing precariously. I don’t usually picture life in a house with a yard and neighbors waving hello. But that’s the edge we’re living on.

The Rift Valley Academy campus is nestled onto the side of the Great Rift Valley, and our dorm is just on the bottom edge. The view out our window as I type is of two mountains overlooking the valley below. It’s beautiful. Our house is not balancing precariously on a cliff, but we are definitely on the edge: the edge of the campus, the edge of the mountain, the edge of the forest just outside the perimeter fence.

We said painful goodbyes, we packed up (and sold) our house and all that was in it, we traversed airports with children and luggage (so much luggage!), we endured three weeks of orientation, we all battled sickness, we finally moved into our home at RVA, we had more orientation, the dorm boys arrived, school started for everyone, and now we find ourselves in the thick of life with our busy family and 21 extra teenage boys all of whom are going in different directions.

The kids were amazing in the airports!

We’ve been living on the edge. Transition and change are challenging. The stress level has been high. We’ve reached the edges of our limits at times, which, I’ll be honest, has not been pretty. Tears have been shed, voices raised, sleep lost. But in the midst of all the hard, there is beauty. Glimpses of what can be. Those brief moments have been such a comfort at the times when we find ourselves balancing precariously on the edge.

We are living a beautiful life here on the edge of the Rift Valley, and it’s only going to get better.

Transition is hard and can be so taxing! We love you Millers and are praying (for each of you) for peace and that you can feel the guiding hand of our God during this time of transition.

You did A LOT more than endure orientation! You triumphed! It was a joy and blessing to watch you and your family! I’m so grateful for these pictures and your blog. Do not grow weary in adding to it! Praying for you, Jill and Ray (and so proud of you!)

IDK about you but I’m finding that on the edge I have to cling to those around me in a way I never had to in North America…. A sweeter and richer dependence on Jesus, my husband, my community, my neighbours, my prayer warriors, and my church. I don’t wanna depend on anyone… it means a loss of control AND YET I’d say that life on the edge in transition has led to deeper abiding and genuine sanctification. So glad you guys are on the edge for the Lord!!
